Kimberly Contreras checks-in with an update from Extended Spring Training, including information on rehabs and on the newest players to join the camp.
I’m not going to bury the lede: the best news coming out of Fitch Park on Tuesday was that catcher Josh Miller would be in the lineup as a DH for the game against the Los Angeles Angels. Regardless of the production, the 23rd round pick in 2013 from the University of South Carolina – Aiken was seeing game action for the first time in year. As is the case with so many on the Extended Spring Training team, injuries halted Josh’s game action after spending the 2013 season with the Vermont Lake Monsters. The next step will be suiting up behind the plate. But that will come. For now, grateful for the progress made today!
Progress on some rehabbing minor leaguers:
– Branden Kelliher threw from 130 feet last week; will throw from flat ground this week. All progressing nicely without any discomfort or pain.
– Tanner Peters will throw again on Thursday; no pain or discomfort for him.
– Ryan Gorton, who is being converted to a pitcher, threw to batters twice, but has been paused due to a bit of discomfort in his right shoulder. Will rest, then resume when appropriate.
– Derek DeYoung’s progress rehabbing after Tommy John surgery is going well.
Some good-byes: May 12th saw the retirement of RHP Travis Pitcher and RHP Tyler Johnson. Both are wonderful young men and there’s no doubt that whatever path they choose next, they will be successful!
Upcoming dates to keep in mind:
Friday, June 5th: Last Extended Spring Training game
Monday, June 8th : MLB First Year Player Draft (Day 1 of 3)
Friday, June 19th: Vermont Lake Monsters (NYPL) home opener vs Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox)
Saturday, June 20th: Arizona Summer Rookie League (AZL) opening night at the Angels – Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Sunday, June 21st: AZL A’s home opener in Mesa against the AZL Giants
There are five new members of the Extended Spring Training roster; all have been in the Dominican Summer League. They include one position player, Luis Barrera, and four pitchers: RHPs Yordy Alejo and Emerson Nelo, and LHPs Jorge Martinez and Ivan Andueza. Barrera was the only one of the five to see game action today, but the others will be mixed in soon.
Along with Barrera, those who played in today’s home game against the Angels – and rehabbing SS, Eric Stamets – include:
Andy Paz, Lana Akau
Luis Barrera – full game at LF; Vicmal De La Cruz at CF; Jhonny Rodriguez in RF
Seongmin Kim and Josh Miller
[Special thanks to Tanner Peters for the information on Stamets. Peters and Stamets were teammates on the 2014 Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League.]
